David Yu's Mint Ginger Lemonade

With my first blog on Wine & Bowties, I think it's important that I share my gastronomic perspective with you guys. I mean, if you're really about to take the time to read my reviews and cook my food, you have to understand where I'm coming from, and where I'm going with my plate in hand. Not only is this a step towards appreciating food, but it's crucial to understanding what I mean when I say "Damn,that's good".

Like the other human necessities (shelter, clothing, etc.) food is, always has been, and always will be art. But in today’s world, we often forget this fact. Somewhere between the drive through and the frozen pizzas, we sometimes treat food like mere fuel. Even worse, when we pull up to the pump, we pick the 87, regular, unleaded stuff because food, like gas, is fucking expensive! But to be perfectly clear, I’m not hating on fast food. As a young person on a budget, only Jack’s spicy chicken is an option after 1 am and Costco’s deep-dish singles are all I can make in the two minutes before I need to be at work. So no doubt there is a place for fast food in our busy lives. But I dare the readers of this blog to take half a step away from the quick, the convenient, the familiar, the unwholesome, and treat food as it should be treated: as art. With that, I’ll leave you with my first recipe: Mint Ginger Lemonade.

This lemonade might be my Mona Lisa thus far, because of its simplicity. It’s got that classic lemonade tang as you sip it and as it goes down your throat you get a spicy kick from the ginger. When you open your mouth once again, air hits your palette to create a cooling sensation from the mint. Perfect for a hot summer day or a mixer for the late night.

Mint Ginger Lemonade:

1 cup sugar

5 cups water

1 small gingerroot, thinly sliced

1 cup lemon juice (about six ripe lemons)

1 tsp mint extract

mint leaves & lemon wedges for garnish (optional)

Heat 1 cup of water in a small pot over medium heat to a simmer. Add ginger, stir and lid the pot to prevent evaporation.  After ten minutes remove ginger and add sugar. Stir to until dissolved. Combine infused syrup with lemon juice, mint extract and remaining water. Chill, garnish with mint and lemon wedges, and serve with lots of ice. Serves 4 thirsty people.

Such is the case with the healthcare debate, which has effectively devolved into theater, with most media attention focusing on the people who talk the most but are the least knowledgeable. Beyond the abstract ramblings about socialism and Hitler lies the fact that millions upon millions of Americans are unable to afford healthcare of any kind. Add to that the fact that millions more who are "covered" still don't get the care they need. In this segment from Real Time with Bill Maher, comedian Dana Gould takes a look at the two sides of the debate. You might be surprised by what you see. Gould's signoff says it all.

So they dropped it. After two teasers and a preview, the official video for Jays second single has been released. A solid effort all around, the video successfully captures the magnitude of the track while featuring three of the biggest acts in the world. While, Jay and Kanye come correct, Rihanna's star shines the brightest. She just comes so epic with it. Style and grace. Style and grace. With BP3 right around the corner, I wonder if this is the precursor to the main event? Most of us are anticipating a classic album, and with ample time Jay has been given the opportunity to create a masterpiece. I guess only time will tell.

With music, it's usually best not to do too much. The xx seem to understand that notion pretty well, building minimalist riffs and beats into catchy pop-rock songs steeped in casual cool. Having built up a serious buzz in the blog world, the British band seems poised for success with their self-titled debut out now in the UK, and dropping soon in the states. Any band that lists Ginuwine and the Pixies as influences is cool with me. And this song is dope.

Using his "Toile De Jouy" patterns, Mark has created a series of paintings featuring Popeye and his crew including Pluto, Olive Oyl, Sweat Pea, and Wimpy. Marks pieces are especially dope when you take a closer look at the figures, as their bodies are made up of contorted faces. Wet.

The best art isn't always the easiest to watch. Furthermore, the art that speaks to us most powerfully is often rooted in reality. Photographer/director Sean Desmond's Tenderloin Project most certainly falls into both categories. The project combines film and photography to paint what Desmond describes as "a compelling and honest portrait" of the Tenderloin, known widely as one of San Francisco's poorest and most marginalized areas. The result is something deeply resonant and meaningful, with a message and a purpose in mind. "The project will culminate in publishing the images in book form," explain the creators, "with proceeds from the sales being donated to organizations that promote and give access to art in the Tenderloin. Sony has recently announced that the price of the Playstation 3 will drop to $300 in September. Not to mention, the system will also be sold in a slimmer version, which will hold 120GB of storage, while using 34% less power. (Only 2 USB's though). Aside from the video games, this price drop may be additionally enticing for tech fans who are eager to utilize the internet capabilities and Blue Ray functionality from a gaming console.

Now after hearing the fellow ATLien's debut, Evil Angel EP, I can't say the hype is unwarranted. The project manages to pack acoustic guitar, electro-hop and soul into six tracks in a way that few people not named Andre or Cee-Lo could pull off. BLU at the FAME Festival

I hope this becomes the norm. Art can do so much. It has the ability to infiltrate our minds and force us to think, or better yet to feel. It can open our minds to wonder, while answering the toughest questions. Italian street artist BLU allows us to imagine what art can be. This piece serves as a glimpse into the endless possibilities that art gives us to make a statement. Below is a piece written by angelino, as he speaks on the work of BLU's creation for the FAME festival in Italy:

if you’re new to FAME festival, you probably dont know that Grottaglie is 10 minutes far from Taranto. if you’ve been in Taranto, you probably remember that the city has a massive ugly factory called ILVA (one of the biggest steel factory in europe).

this factory is destroying the territory and killing a lot of workers ’cause of its big lack of security measures and high environmental pollution. the direct consequence is that Taranto has one of the highest rate of death by cancer in italy.

As a plus, the smartest politicians from Grottaglie’s town council allowed, back in ‘96, the construction of a very filthy special wastes dump right outside the city. they did not inform the people, they did not ask anybody’s opinion, they just did it. i wish i could wonder WHY they did it.

this said,

i usually like to think that every piece of art can have different meaning, depending on who is looking at it and from wich perspective he is looking from. this time, i prefer to think that we’re all looking at a mere mirror of the actual situation we’re living in.

especially for our mean local politicians, none of them excluded. i hope that they can recognise themselves in these huge faces and feel disgusted for what they’ve done to their people." - angelino

Ant Colonies At A Glance

Ants are pretty clean. When they aren't in your house they're pretty settled. They are the definition of team players. Their anatomy is conducive to sharing as well, as their two stomachs serve separate functions using one to store food for themselves and the other to store food to be shared with other ants. I wonder what it'd be like to just be an ant up in a colony. Do they have dreams of making it? Do they even have a conception of making it? Are worker ants trying to step it up to soldier ants by the end of '09? Who knows. This video is wild though. Sort of makes you wonder what else insects are capable of.

Made up of guitarist Mike Stroud and synthesizer Evan Mast, the duo got together in '04 to record their debut album Ratatat. Ratatat has dropped two remix albums over the past couple of years which have helped to extend their sphere by featuring hip hop artists on their electric beats. This is the cleanest dance group I've seen. Beat Your Feet Kings. Now I haven't had the privilege of watching an entire episode of Americas Best Dance Crew, but from what I've seen, they are the best out, and my pick to win it the contest. But as I mentioned, my perspective is limited, if there's someone icier, let it be known. I can see them winning it, but I could also see why the judges might flop them. If they can combine choreographed moves for the entire group to perform they could win, otherwise they might be deemed merely a group of individuals. Nonetheless this performance is impressive. 1:08 though.

Jonathan Mannion + Drake for FADER

Last week, Drizzy's face graced the cover of FADER, along with the headline "Drake and his inscrutable rise to fame and fortune". Inscrutable indeed. The dude is talented beyond anyone's expectations. Photographer Jonathan Mannion is known best for his iconic hip-hop photography, having built his reputation with memorable album covers like this one, this one, and this other one. Mannion did a beautiful job with the FADER cover story, capturing the young artist on the brink of becoming unprecedently, well, successful.

Stephen Colbert "Defends" Glenn Beck

In a world where Fox News dominates the ratings, the reasonable people of the world are lucky to have Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on their team. Recently Fox News' Glenn Beck has been the subject of heated debate after accusing Barack of being a racist and comparing him to Hitler. In response, several corporate sponsors pulled their ads for Glenn's show. In this clip, Colbert takes the opportunity to speak on the situation, as usual with a heavy dose of satire and sarcasm. Usually, I feel like the best policy is to ignore the dumb shit and keep it moving, but when people like Beck are consistently running their mouth and spreading misinformation, it's only necessary for Stephen to call them out on it. This shit is jokes.

The Void LP Player

Now take a look at this. Ben just laced us. We all know vinyl sales are up in the '09. This is pretty much the iciest vinyl player out. On some Sharper Image tip. Known as the Void LP Player, the record player uses a carrier and dock outfitted with a magnetic control system which carries the LP into thin air as it is playing music. A self-running record player shaped in the form of a red sphere, contains a needle, amplifier and speaker, which spins around the record. Amazing. Mayer Hawthorne - "Maybe So, Maybe No"

Contrary to popular belief, it's actually a good time to be a new artist in hip-hop and R&B right now. With Cudi and Drake seemingly well on the path to superstardom, and others like Wale and Trey scoring Billboard hits, it seems like this generation of musicians is starting to hit its stride. Believe it or not though, I'm as juiced for Mayer as I am for just about anybody else from the freshman class. Yeah, he's a little squarish looking. And yeah, his sound is more '69 than '09. But that's exactly what sets the 27-year old singer/songwriter apart from most of his contemporaries. This video is dope not just for the Venice Beach scenery, or the Rob Dyrdek sighting at 1:15, but because it manages to convey a lot of personality. Mayer is that dude. Huf is one of those streetwear brands that has achieved longevity in the game because of their ability to remain authentic while constantly evolving as a brand. London's Biggest-Ever Diamond Heist

It's always cool to me when some shit you've seen in the movies comes to fruition in real life. Say what you will about the morality of it all, but you can't help but marvel at the fact that these guys managed to pull off a £40 million come up (just over $66 million U.S.). I'm sure the bystanders were pretty shaken up by the whole thing, but personally I can't really muster too much sympathy for a high-end diamond retail chain. In any case, here's the story from The Independent's Mark Hughes:

A 50-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the £40 million armed robbery at a Mayfair jewellers - Britain's biggest ever jewel heist.

The man was arrested at an address in Illford, east London, on Monday, four days after the robbery, which took place at the Graff Diamond jewellers on New Bond Street at 4.40pm on Thursday.

The man, who has since been released on bail, is not one of the two men in the CCTV footage released by the Metropolitan Police. A police source described him as a "minor player".

This morning mobile phone footage emerged which showed the moment that two men escaped with their haul. The video was taken by a man who just happened to be filming on New Bond Street at the time the robbery happened.

In the video the two suited suspects are clearly seen leaving the store. A man's voice shouts "call the police" before a gunshot is fired and screams are heard.

The footage then distorts and re-starts with a woman talking. a man reassures her: "They are gone, they are gone. Calm down, calm down."

The men stole 43 pieces of jewellery in two minutes before taking a female staff member hostage to make their escape.

Their haul included a pair of white, round, diamond double-hoop earrings, a yellow diamond flower necklace, a platinum white Marquise diamond ring and a Chronograph men's 45mm watch.

Coconut Records - "Microphone"

You might recognize Jason Schwartzman from damn near every Wes Anderson flick (The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, Darjeeling Limited), and more recently Funny People. What a lot of folks don't know about Jason is that he's also a talented singer, songwriter and musician. Coconut Records is the name of Schwartzman's solo project, whose first album, Nighttiming caught the attention of Judd Apatow, landing him three songs on the Funny People soundtrack. Davy, his sophomore album dropped earlier this year, along with the single, "Microphone". Dope song and a solid video to go with it.

Kid Cudi Man On The Moon Album Artwork

Cudi's music is GOOD, pun intended, but his presentation and delivery is great. Maybe you'd call it artistry. While he has provided us with music to live to, he has also created compelling visual works to accompany his music and further portray his demeanor and scope. With the album set to drop September 15th, Cudi has the ball in his court and the game in his hands. As afore mentioned, the best artists have us anticipating what they'll do next. Cudi's Man On The Moon cover does just that.

Nike Sportswear Fall/Winter Varsity Jacket

Varsity jackets might be the fall/winter move. I can see folks coppin a blank one and buying patches to put on. Not surprisingly, Nike Sportswear comes with their initial fall offering of their NSW varsity jackets. As with most, the NSW jackets feature a melton wool body with leather sleeves. But the varsity jacket raises one peculiar question. The var jacket is cool for Seniors Juniors and outstanding Sophomores but on the real? What are the JV cats supposed to rock?

Pop Crime, hosted by Newcastle, England's own Opus Gallery is a joint exhibition, showcasing the work of pop-art and graffiti artists SheOne and Crash. Though their styles are visually distinct from one another, Pop Crime is a natural pairing, bringing together two of the world's premier street artists. SheOne, known for his graffiti art in London, is behind the abstract black and white designs (as seen on the Mini below), while the Bronx-bred Crash did the more colorful paintings. Wetness. The art of hosting a dope interview is a tricky thing to get right. For most people, it seems like the trick is to be funny and engaging yourself, but in such a way that you're not stealing the spotlight. The focus needs to be on the person being interviewed. Chelsea definitely deserves the credit for making her interviews entertaining, even if sometimes she's doing a lot. Fresh off the number one spot on the Billboard charts with Loso's Way, Fab dropped in to chat with Chelsea last night. The two brush on unprotected sex, weed trafficking, and of course the album. Pretty funny all around.

Fresh Jive Drops All Branding & Logos

Rick Klotz is the owner and designer of Fresh Jive. Established in 1989, Fresh Jive has been influential in the rise of street wear and urban culture, bringing the lifestyle to the forefront over the past couple of years. However, as the streetwear climate changes today, Klotz has become rather 'disenchanted' by the pressence of branding within his company, and has made an unprecedented move to omit all branding and logos from Fresh Jive products. In an interview with Bobby Hundreds, Klotz speaks on the change in presentation, and his reasoning behind the move. A really fascinating move on the part of Klotz as his decision forces consumers to attach themselves to the ideology of the brand rather than a visual acknowledgement. It will be interesting to see if other brands adopt this change in the months to come.

on the thoughts and motives behind the decision: Throughout the years I’ve become uncomfortable with this business of branding and brand identity. I’m not the type of person that buys something for the brand name. I’ve also never done a very good job at creating a captivating identity to our own brand logo. Also, within the streetwear culture, the promotion of a company’s brand has become downright silly to me. What’s amusing is I still really enjoy designing gear, graphics, and even logos. But when I see kids wearing company logos it reminds of people who are trying to be a part of a “tribe” or “gang”, as if they need to be part of something, which seems to go against the idea of individualism in style.

on taking on a new name: Well, let’s be practical. The company is still Freshjive. It’s just that none of our product will have any of our logos or even our name AT ALL. Not even in the labels. And after the turn of the year, no promotional material, nor our website will have any logos. It’s really invigorating to approach designing a line WITHOUT the constrictions of how the logo is gonna be placed or used on the garments.

was dropping the name the only way to solve the problem? Well this was the only way to solve the problem without just closing down and starting a new brand. But that would be TOO easy in a sense. It’s WAY more punk to have this company running for 20 years and then dropping the name brand. I’m punk.

Beautifully designed furniture is dope, but I think comfort reigns supreme. I'd rather post on a ugly comfy couch, than a great looking hard one. Below, is a modern table concept by John Nouanesing. Slim legs give the illusion of a dripping board. A conversation starter to say the least.

Nike Presents The Hyperizers

Part of Nike's latest ad campaign for the Hyperize kicks. Can't say I love the shoes, but this shit is worth the watch for so many reasons. If the idea of Andre Iguodala, Kevin Durant, Rashard Lewis and Mo Williams gettin on a track isn't reason enough, at least watch for Mo's jheri curl. Is it me or does Durant lightweight have bars? As an actor one day you are Lucas Cooltone and the next role you are Samuel Swenky. Versatility. So you don't just fall in a routine of something boring. You can be funny, serious, dramatic, in love, etc.

New Radiohead is generally good Radiohead. Their latest, "Harry Patch" is a tribute to Patch himself, the last living soldier to have fought in the trenches during World War I. Patch lived to be 111 years old, making him the third oldest man on the planet, and one of the 70 oldest men ever, before passing away on July 25th. In a beautiful tribute, Radiohead pays homage over a swirling string arrangement that might sound more at home in a Hollywood score. Inspired by an emotional interview he heard with the veteran, Thom Yorke says in regards to the song: "it would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us. I hope we do not forget."

With bees dying at unprecedented rates, U.S agriculture is at the mercy of the phenomenon. To put some perspective on it, according to Target Health Inc. all of the following are dependent on bees, apples, pears, tangerines, peaches, soybeans, pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, carrots, broccoli and avocados. And bees also pollinate almonds? California has the biggest almond groves in the world, supplying 80 percent of the nuts on the market; they currently have to import millions of bees to pollinate the groves. It's even more crucial than we think:

Many people would be surprised to know that 90% of the feral (wild) bee population in the United States has died out. Recent studies in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands have shown that bee diversity is down 80 percent in the sites researched, and that “bee species are declining or have become extinct in Britain.” The studies also revealed that the numbers of wildflowers that depend on pollination have dropped by 70 percent. Which came first, the decline in wildflowers or the decline in pollinators, has yet to be determined. If bees continue to die off so would the crops they support and with that would ensue major economic disruption and possibly famine.

At stake is the work the honeybees do, pollinating more than USD 15 billion worth of US crops, including Pennsylvania’s apple harvest, the fourth-largest in the nation, worth USD 45 million, and New Jersey’s cranberries and blueberries.

While a few crops, such as corn and wheat, are pollinated by the wind, bees help pollinate more than 90 commercially grown field crops, citrus and other fruit crops, vegetables and nut crops. Without these insects, crop yields would fall dramatically and some tangerines and pecans would cease to exist. Agronomists estimate Americans owe one in three bites of food to bees.”

Doctors Baffled By Indian Village With 200+ Sets of Twins

This is just some unusual shit. The tiny Indian town of Kodinji is what we might call a statistical anomaly. How can it be that this village has a rate of twin-births four times that of the worldwide average? Teachers in this town must get dumb ass confused. From Yahoo! News:

Walk around Kodinji village and you'll think that you have double vision. The village is home to as many as 230 sets of twins. Nobody knows why there are so many twins in the village of 15,000 people, although one local doctor suspects it might be due to the water.

In fact with about 35-45 twins per live birth, this village in North Kerala, India, has four times more twins than normal. Not surprisingly, the village has been dubbed "the twin village." The latest official estimates by the Kodinji's Twins and Kins Association (TAKA), which conducted door-to-door surveys at the start of the year, found that there were 204 sets of twins. Based on births since the survey was conducted, there are probably now around 230 sets of twins in the village, locals said. That number is set to rise as there are five women pregnant with twins.

Scientists are still trying to uncover the mystery of why there are so many twins in the village. "All the factors leading to the occurrence of twinning world wide, we cannot see it here. There is something unknown that is causing this phenomenon," he said.

Hollywood House of Blues Redesign Project Unveiled

This week, Curbed LA offered a detailed report of the House of Blues redesign project, a plan to incorporate the legendary venue into a huge hotel and mixed-use complex. Not even sure how to comment on this one. Without a doubt, this will be yet another crackin spot to go to with friends. On the other hand, does Sunset really need another huge, overblown commercial attraction?

Anyway, here are the specifics from Curbed:

The project includes the 76-foot-tall Sunset Hotel and Residences, the 63-foot-tall Olive Hotel and Residences, and the 35-foot tall De Longpre Residences. All told, there are 149 hotel rooms, 40 residential condos, five affordable housing units, and up to 35,000 square feet of commercial space.

And sounds like there will be delicious rooftop pools, lounges and restaurants for all you WeHoians to frolic in. There are also 426 parking spaces.

The developers are proposing the Kanner Architects-designed project be swathed in giant digital ads. From the draft EIR: "The proposed project would include a large screen video sign installation, which would be integrated into the architecture of the Sunset Hotel and Residences building. The sign would wrap the northern, eastern, and western façades and would contain, in total between all three facades, approximately 5,300 square feet of light emitting diode illuminated panels."

Bibio, AKA Stephen Wilkinson is a British producer who recently released Ambivalence Avenue, a dope collection of experimental tracks ranging from acoustic compositions to spacey funk and electronic beats cooked up on the MPC. Dilla would be proud of this. On a related note, Rest in Peace to Baatin from Slum Village. Dude had one of the coolest voices ever recorded, and I know he'll be missed by music heads everywhere. It might be all bad for post offices in the future. The internet, and more specifically email have severely damaged the age old method of communication. Honestly though, how many of us have mailed a letter out of our own volition in the past six months, without the prodding of a parent? Post offices need to switch it up fast before they become extinct, like Dinosaurs and Cybikos.

(Business Journal) “New technology is profoundly affecting services in both the private and public sectors, including traditional mail delivery,” said acting comptroller general and head of GAO Gene Dodaro in a statement. “Compounded by the current recession, the volume of mail being sent is dropping substantially, leading to a sizable decline in revenue,” he said. GAO recommends the Postal Service work with Congress and other stakeholders to develop a more sustainable restructuring plan.

The Postal Service’s problems may continue to worsen even after the recession ends. Both consumer and business customers are using traditional mail less and less in favor of e-mail and other means of communication. Mail volume last year fell by 9.5 billion pieces to 203 billion pieces and it is expected to fall to 175 billion pieces this year.

The Postal Service anticipates mail volume will continue to remain flat or decline further over the next five years.The USPS is expected to post a $7 billion loss this year. It has outstanding debt of $10 billion and may have a cash shortfall this year of $1 billion.

In order to meet payroll and other expenses this year, the USPS hopes to delay payments to its retiree health care fund. It is also closing post office locations, cutting jobs and freezing salaries. It may also reduce mail delivery from six days a week to five.The GAO report says the Postal Service isn’t undertaking cost-cutting fast enough. It also suggests it explore opportunities to generate new forms of revenue.

Would you believe me if I told you each of these drawings was done by ballpoint pen? The detail Spanish artist Juan Francisco Casas puts into each of his sexually charged works makes it seem almost impossible, but apparently it's true. When considering how realistically he renders light, texture and motion, it makes the work that much more impressive. This is the kind of thing you can't help but be inspired by. If Juan can make something so perfect with just a pen, there's no telling what you or I could create using a paintbrush, a trumpet or even our own two hands. Sky's the limit I suppose. Zion I - "Coastin"

My Bay folks already know Zion I is a movement. This February, Amp Live and Zumbi dropped The Take Over, one of the most musically diverse and inventive hip-hop albums to drop in a long while. A few months later came the video for "Geek to the Beat", still one of the dopest videos I've seen so far this year. The next single is "Coastin'", featuring K Flay, and once again the visuals are on point. Both videos from the album have been impressive in that they rely on creativity and compelling imagery, even if the budget is limited. The independent grind may be tough, but folks like Zion I will continue to be able to do their thing even as would-be major label stars flop themselves time and again. The difference is originality and true talent. Zion I has both.

Avant Garde's Revaluation of the Dollar

Props to Hypebeast's Phillip T. Annand for digging this up. Annand found this piece in an issue of Avant Garde, an art and design magazine that was published between 1968 and 1971. In this issue of the publication, various artists were asked to reimagine the one dollar bill with which we are all so familiar. Focusing on social criticism and satire, as well as an attention to color and design, each of the reinterpretations are dope in their own way. Like a lot of great art, this project required the artists behind it to take an everyday, commonplace subject and turn it into something visually exciting or provocative.

Rickey Goes

Rickey Henderson has to be one of the cleanest ever to do it. The fact that he once stole 130 bases in a season sounds like I made it up. The fact that he stole 1406 of them during his storied career gives you an idea of just how hard he was going. Rickey was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Friday almost unanimously, after a storied career that spanned nearly four decades. W&B honors the self-proclaimed "greatest of all time", and a true Town legend. Oakland stand up.

Chromeo - "I Can't Tell You Why"

Chromeo makes some cool music. Falling somewhere between synthpop and electro-funk, the Canadian duo made noise two years ago with their Fancy Footwork album, along with the video for "Bonafied Lovin"'. Now, Chromeo is back with a cover of the Eagles' "I Can't Tell You Why", that sounds like a really good imitation of Discovery-era Daft Punk. Enough with the parallels though, this one is settled. Killin it on the vocoder (the real one, no DOA). Looking forward to more from these two.

Apple Tablet: the Rebirth of the Album?

Apple is already killing the game in so many ways. For multiple generations of consumers it has become increasingly clear that they just make the best products in their field. Now the Financial Times reports that Apple is on their way to offering a small but fully functional personal computer, ready for release this holiday season. The Tablet looks to present some serious competition for other music players, as well as the Kindle, as Apple has been in talks with both music and publishing companies regarding the project. From the Financial Times:

The device is expected to be launched alongside new content details, including some aimed at stimulating sales of CD-length music, according to people briefed on the project. This news comes amid rumors of a recent collaboration between Apple and the four major record labels (Warner, Sony, EMI and Universal) on the project. The touch-sensitive computer will have a screen that may be up to 10 inches diagonally.

It will connect to the internet like the iPod Touch – probably without phone capability but with access to the web, and to Apple’s online stores for software and entertainment.

Apple is gambling that it can succeed where everyone else has flopped, including Microsoft, which tirelessly pushed a tablet-ready version of its Windows operating system as a personal favourite of founder Bill Gates.

The entertainment industry is hoping that Apple, which revolutionised the markets for music players and for phones, can do it again. “It’s a portable entertainment device,” said one entertainment executive. “It’s going to be fabulous for watching movies.”

Recording industry executives said Apple planned to use the larger screen to offer new services such as interactive booklets and liner notes that come along with purchases of entire music CDs.

If you've seen The Hangover, you know this dude is funny off top. Galifianakis, who starred as Alan in the summer blockbuster is well on his way to being the next comedian to blow up on the Hollywood scene. The category is littered by folks who got their big break in the same type of summer comedy. Steve Carrell, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Jason Segel to name a few. Looks like you can add Zach's name to that list soon. Conan does a solid job as usual with the interview. Outta pocket at times, but seriously entertaining. Tyson story starts around 5:00. Comedy.

Kanye West: Live at the Chicago Theatre

It's no secret who has the most theatrical live shows these days. From the background singers, to the extensive live instrumentation, to the flashing lights, his shows are full fledged productions. Last night, Fuse TV aired Mr. West's "Stay in School" benefit concert, an effort to raise attendance in Chicago public schools. Students who kept their attendance up last year were honored with a free ticket to watch Ye do his thing live on stage. It seems as though the best ads are the ones that disrupt our daily routines and demand our attention. Public spectacles are nice, and might work best for drawing people in by harnessing the attention of a collective group of people. Sort of on that, "What are all these people looking at, I should check it out," type thing. Mayer Hawthorne - "Maybe So, Maybe No"

For what it's worth, Mayer has the W&B co-sign. The dude just understands what makes a great soul song. And not the polished, plastic sound of most modern R&B. Real soul. There's some grit in it. The lyrics and melodies speak directly to you, taking you to a different place and time. If "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" isn't in your life in some form, it should be. The Detroit-based musician will be dropping A Strange Arrangement this fall on Stones Throw. I, for one will be making that purchase.

As the second largest tank in the world, Kuroshiro Sea is one of the premier destinations to experience life in the open ocean. Holding 1,981,280 gallons of water, the tank holds 78 species of fish and four whale sharks. It's a trip though, the ocean was here before we got here, and it'll be here long after we leave. We woke up around noon. Last night was a long one. Cocobaba had never been on the boat before so we decided to take it out for a spin. Ben had the trees on deck, I brought the slaps. We copped some cantaloupe for the ride, and picked up some bad ones on the way. For once the Police wern't hounding us, rather they were singing in the background, adding to the day. We sipped coronas in the sunshine, so we were on one, settled. We got back to the beach around five, and collapsed upon the softest sand. We laid out and laughed about where we had been and joked about where we were going. Those were the days. Life had treated us well and we were appreciative. We felt invincible. I looked into the sky and whispered to the clouds, "I hope these moments last forever."

There are too many folks putting out inspiring music in the world today. The internet is a unique platform that levels the industry playing field, and gives little-known and unusual artists a chance to get some shine. It also gives listeners like us the opportunity to hear them, giving us a ridiculous selection at our fingertips. If it wasn't for all that, I wouldn't know about Turkish producer Alan Palomo's side project Neon Indian, and we'd be missing out on a slap. Oakland Voters Approve Marijuana Tax

Trees are just becoming more acceptable. A general shift of perception that has been changing ever so slightly over time. It seems like people are beginning to see the hypocrisy of some laws in America. Are the laws on alcohol and tobacco in line with the laws against marijuana when analyzing the effects of each? The voters of Oakland have made a statement. How will the rest of the country respond?

On Tuesday became the first city in the US to assess a tax on marijuana. State and national advocates of the tax say the victory is a significant turning point in the history of cannabis use, paving the way for taxation in other communities and states and establishing more social acceptance of marijuana use.

Opponents say an irreversible threshold has been crossed, opening the door to more crime and heavier drug use.

By a wide margin of 80 percent to 20 percent, Oakland voters said "yes" to Measure F, which asked: "Shall City of Oakland's business tax, which currently imposes a tax rate of $1.20 per $1,000 on 'cannabis business' gross receipts, be amended to establish a new tax rate of $18 per $1,000 of gross receipts?"

"The voters of Oakland have sent a message to the nation that cannabis is better treated as a legitimate, tax-paying business than as a cause of crime and futile law-enforcement expenditures," says Dale Gieringer, California state coordinator for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

The city estimates that the measure will raise $294,000 in additional tax revenue in 2010 and more in future years. Some say the measure will provide funds to help offset the city's current $83 million deficit as well as allow police to direct their limited resources to more serious crimes and drug offenses.

Using a strobe light to illuminate the splotches, Mark captures his pictures through an underwater tank. Once submerged the dueling consistencies create these incredible images, the shapes mimicking colorful dancers in the spotlight.

U-N-I - "Land of the Kings"

You have to appreciate artists who are willing to try new things. After teaming up with producer Ro Boulevard for A Love Supreme earlier this year, the L.A.-based tandem is back with a new sound for Land of the Kings, incorporating live instrumentation with a touch of indie rock. The song is solid, but the video is something else entirely. Director Tomas Whitmore gives us his vision of the land of kings, making this maybe their most compelling work yet. W&B certified.

Trey Songz - "You Belong to Me"

Trey is doin it. "I Need a Girl" is a settled single, and with a key feature on "Successful", he's been shutting down the airwaves for the last couple weeks. Last week, Trey dropped Swagga Like Songz Vol. 2 (get it here), and once again he gets on some of the hottest beats of the moment, plus a few originals. Kellz diss over "D.O.A." is comedy. Gotta say though, him over "Paper Planes" was way cleaner than "Birthday Sex", but Volume 2 still has some hitters on deck. "You Belong to Me" is one of them. Lights should be down low for this one.

Cotdamn. Graceland is just a really, really good album. Just about any song from it can put a smile on my face in seconds flat. Think 80s pop rock takes a trip to South Africa. If you've never had a chance to listen to Paul's 1986 classic, pick up a copy whenever you get a chance. Find it on vinyl and you're super winning. "I Know What I Know" is what we might call a settled slap. More summer music.
