I'm not a fan of the term "real hip-hop". Most people who use it have a pretty closed-minded picture in mind, and generally it has more to do with their personal taste than anything else. But with that said, if anybody fits the description, Public Enemy & Pete Rock are on the short list. For those in need of a history lesson, Public Enemy is one of the most influential and politically vocal groups hip-hop has ever seen. Long before Flavor of Love, PE was busy redefining the sonic and social possibilities of a growing musical culture. Pete Rock is the legendary producer behind classics by Nas, A Tribe Called Quest and Redman among many others. Along with C.L. Smooth, Pete created classic music, profoundly influencing producers like J Dilla & Kanye West. Word is Diddy even jacked him for the "Juicy" beat. If you don't know, now you know. Listen up.
