Do People Really Use Twitter?

Over the past couple of months, Twitter has got a lot of people talking, but how many are really tweeting? In a recent analysis done on the company, it appears as though a small percentage of people are creating a large percentage of the content submitted to Twitter. Techcrunch breaks it down:

A full 80 percent of Twitter accounts have fewer than 10 followers, according to an analysis of seven million Twitter accounts provided to TechCrunch by Web security firm Purewire (which operates TweetGrade). What’s more, 30 percent have zero followers.

The fact that an estimated 32 million people around the world visited Twitter.com alone in April certainly indicates that there is something going on there. It just may be that Twitter really isn’t as much about two-way micro-conversations as it is about one-way micro-broadcasting. Indeed, a recent Harvard Business School study suggested that the top 10 percent of Twitter users produce more than 90 percent of all Tweets.

  1. Twitter is awesome! I never thought I'd be into it, but if you are following the right people it can lead to some really interesting (and incredibly fast) information. For instance, if a new Jay-Z song leaks, you'll have access within seconds. If there is an earthquake in LA, someone (everyone) will tweet about it while it's happening.

  2. I agree the immediacy of information is incredible. I thik that 32million number is from a a lot of people who wanted to know what all the fuss was about but figured it wasn't for them. It takes a while to get the hang of it and understand what's going on but once you get it, it becomes incredibly useful. My sn is maxgibson1

  4. Microbroadcasting is definitely more like it. I don't have a problem with twitter, but I just gotta say: who gives a fuck if everyone is posting about an earthquake as its happening? Why do I need to be subscribed to miley cirus' twitter account to know the ground's fucking shaking?
