Harlem in Flux

Photographer Camilo Jose Vergara has recently finished work on Harlem in Flux, a 100-picture exhibit featured at the New York Historical Society. The work displays his documentation of Harlem over the last 40 years, focusing on the ways in which neighborhoods change over time. By photographing various storefronts as they change in shape and function, Vergara manages to capture the essence of many of the important economic and cultural shifts in recent history, offering a portrait of how these various factors effect urban neighborhoods. A good example is the second photo, depicting a man named Eddie who farmed the empty lot shown for years in the 90s; the location in the picture is now home to luxury apartments and a Starbucks.
